Curvoflite Stairs And Millwork is a third generation, seventy year old family business of hand-crafted circular and spiral stairs. The founder, Tom Walsh, Sr., started this woodworking business when during the depression of 1933, while working as a salesman for a similar company, his pay was reduced to $25.00 a week, then finally lost his job altogether as times got even harder. Our grandfather borrowed $500.00 from his in-laws, and started T. J. Walsh & Co., Inc., a millwork company that grew to over one hundred employees and took up a whole city block. Back then, they unloaded lumber from the nearby railroad tracks, there was no Home Depot to buy building materials from, so builders and new homeowners would come to a shop like ours for everything including doors, windows, closet poles, cabinetry, trim, etc. When Tom Walsh Jr., was all of ten years old, he got his start in his father''s mill by sweeping the floors after school. He worked his way up'' to being the company''s on the road salesman, then Manager, and eventually the founder of Curvoflite Stairs And Millwork, Inc. Curvoflite was created from a need by the company''s best builder, who needed to access a loft in a Vermont barn for one of his customers, while using the smallest amount of space possible. This need, combined with Tom''s curiosity and knowledge, and the Shop Foreman''s talent, is how the first Curvoflite spiral was built. Later, the ultimate customer decided not to use a spiral, so the Builder put it in his own Vermont barn, where it still stands in great shape today. This original stair is the only Curvoflite stair to be built with a square center pole, as we then perfected the design to be a round pole, in keeping with the fluid lines of a spiral. Three of Tom''s children are continuing the family business today by bringing their own unique abilities to the corporate table. Mary excels at design, viewing each new plan submitted for a bid as if the stair was going in her own home, so no small detail gets overlooked. Tim has taken over his father''s position of traveling salesman, greeting customers, anchoring the sale, and seeing each job through to completion. Tom and his mechanical savvy has a great handle on running the shop, keeping on top of all details to make sure each job goes out the door smoothly, marketing at trade shows, etc. This combination of love of the business, along with complimentary talents is what''s kept this business running for nearly a century. We now produce stairs with glass balustrades, metal balusters of all designs, exterior spiral and circular stairs that hold up to the elements beautifully without rusting like metals stairs normally do within one year, and of course, each customer creates their own stair with their choice of woods, styles and more....
