In 1984 Dernis International opened its doors in Norfolk, Virginia operating as an importer of European marble for the residential market. Within one year, Dernis launched its fireplace division, selling pre-cut fireplace surrounds to the building products industry. By 1988 Dernis built a 30,000 square foot plant in Virginia Beach that serves as its headquarters today. Dernis experienced rapid growth in the 1990's, selling marble and granite furniture tops to companies such as Thomasville, American Drew, Kincaid, Henredon, Millender and Hinkle Harris. As production of furniture tops moved overseas, Dernis launched its Hospitality Division in 1999 and quickly expanded its offerings to include wood products such as vanity bases and kitchen cabinets for hotel guest rooms.
