John Brodie Newall, an accomplished poet, scholar and master mason, parted with his family in 1905 from the town of Dalbeattie, Scotland. He left his brother David the family business - a granite quarry and Monumental Works company that gave birth to the town of Dalbeattie in 1820 - which continues to produce today.
       John Brodie's search for a writer's paradise led him to British Columbia - a land of great beauty comparable to his beloved Scotland.
       In 1909, J.B. Newall Memorials was established at the corner of Fraser and 35th across from the original Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver, BC.
       In 1941, J.B. died but his work endured and his eldest son Nathan, a student in second-year medicine, was called upon to run the family business. It was a difficult decision for Nathan at first, but as a descendent of generations of granite stone carvers he held the hammer and chisel with ease. Soon, Nathan was admired by his peers as one of the finest stonecutters of his time. The blow of J.B.'s hammer and chisel is still felt and heard today, held by his grandson, Alan David Newall and his great grandson Brodie Alan Newall who have been taught by generations of master-mason carvers and continue to produce incomparable quality.
