Soapstone is a soft, natural stone that is durable and will last a lifetime if properly cared for. If you have soapstone counter tops in your kitchen or bathroom, part of maintaining them is cleaning them properly. Don't just pick up any cleaner and start scrubbing the counter top. Certain products and chemicals can damage or mar the surface, so using the right cleaning products is a must to keep your soapstone looking its best.

Things You'll Need
Mild dish detergent
Soft rags
Soft sponge

Instructions

1. Fill the sink with warm water. Add a few drops of mild dish detergent. Mix up the detergent and water with your hands.

2. Dip a soft rag or sponge into the soapy water. Wring it out so it's not dripping wet.

3.  Wipe the soapstone counter top with the rag or sponge and soapy water. Rinse and wring out the sponge in the sink of soapy water frequently to avoid reapplying dirt and grime.

4. Go over the counter top with a damp rag to remove any soap residue. Buff with a dry rag to remove moisture.

Tips & Warnings

If stains appear on the counter top, lightly sand the area with a slightly abrasive sandpaper such as 80 grit. Rub lightly until the stain is gone, then clean the area with a rag and warm, soapy water.

Avoid using cleaners like lemon or vinegar, which contain acids. Bleach, ammonia, abrasive cleaners, alkaline cleaners and scouring powders must also be avoided. Such products may permanently damage the counter top.

Avoid using scouring pads or steel wool to clean soapstone counter tops.
