It’s common to think that stone is a kind of eternal-life decoration material, but actually it’s not. In the wild, dust, waste gas, acid rain, frost and other pollutants are easy to damage building stones, which influence stones’ decorative effect and use-life. Besides, improper construction also can lead to unsuccessful decorating, which cause people have to re-construct in a short term and waste a lot of efforts.
There are many reasons that make stones come into bad situation and reduce their lifecycle. In general, the factors influenced stone lifecycle are as follows.
1. Internal reason. That is changes of stone’s molecular structure and chemical changes.
2. External reason. That is caused by quarrying, processing and installation as well as surroundings.
The common problems of stones mainly are water spots, salting-out and carbonation, efflorescence, rusty spots and yellowing, frost damage, corrosion on the surface, coloring matter (including oil), moss growth, pulverization and exfoliation etc.
Because of stones’ natural structure, there are micro fractures and pores on the natural stones. As time goes on, litter dust and pollution will be absorbed and seeped into stone, which reduce the stone’s lifetime. Moreover, some components of stone are easy to react in natural situation. Then stones will come into being corroded and damaged.
