The Origins of Sandstone Tiles

Trying to choose a type of stone can be confusing. Here is some basic information on sandstone.

Sandstone is composed essentially of cemented grains of sand, sandstone has a granular texture and is the second most abundant of all sedimentary rock, shale being the first. In addition to quartz, sandstone may consist of sand sized particles of calcite, gypsum or various iron compounds.

Like sand, sandstone may be any color, but the most common colors are tan, brown, yellow, red, grey and white. This can have issues when trying to lay out a consistent colour pattern on the floor as the batch of slabs you get could have considerable variation in colour from slab to slab.

Sandstone is a classic sedimentary rock that forms from the cementing together of sand sized grains forming a solid rock and is therefore porous so will require impregnation and sealing when used internally. It is a very stable product, mostly resistant to weathering, yet easy to work.
