Beijing is no second to Shanghai in regard with stone consumption as it becomes the organizer of the 2008 Olympic Games.
In the next 4 years, USD 20 billion will be used for 142 key projects of the city construction of Beijing, and this is with the intention of catching up with other metropolises in the world. Until 2008, China’s central government has budgeted USD 14.3 billion for improving city facilities related to the Olympic Games.

In the next 9 years, one runway, 55 standard gate positions will be added to Beijing Capital Airport. Terminal 3 has already been put into service. In the years to come about 500,000 square meters of the stone products will be used in the subway construction. Beijing’s city subway will reach 408 km long.

Stone consuming projects in Beijing also include the construction of 16 wastewater-processing factories, 12 industrial pollution treatment systems and the tube system of the city. And they will cost USD 50 billion as part of the metropolis’ program budget. An additional USD 4 billion will be used for constructing office buildings and business centers.

Before the opening of the 2008 Olympic Games, 19 new stadiums will be built in Beijing and 5 in Tsingdao and Tianjin with a gross investment of USD 200 million. Merely the central part of stadiums construction in Beijing measures 2 million square meters.

Also, the schedule of CBD (Central Business District) area of Beijing was ratified in 2001. The program will use up to USD 30 billion. The program defined the size of the area within 10 million square meters that’ll be made up of office buildings that takes 50% of the area, mansions 25% leaving 25% of the CBD area for business services, recreation facilities and so on. The building alongside main roads will not be less than 150 meters.
Subway lines will be crossing under the area too.

Chinese people are getting rich! In the next 4 years, old apartments and houses of 9 million square meters will be torn down; in the meantime, new apartment buildings will rise.

At present, there are 392 hotels above 2 stars with 80,000 rooms in Beijing. Before 2010, Beijing city will build up to 800 hotels with 130 thousand rooms.

Besides, other giant projects will need a great amount of stone materials; no one has made a prefiguring on how much stone would be used in Beijing’s city construction. Only those who come to test the market would know.
