Your natural stone tile was a large investment and one that you want to keep looking brand new for years to come. Proper care and cleaning of your stone tile will go a long way toward preserving its beauty. Avoiding harsh chemicals and proactively cleaning up spills are two ways that you can stay on top of the damage and prevent scratches and stains.

Instructions

1. Spot-clean you floor for stains and spills. For areas with ground-in dirt, food or other substances, dampen a rag with a pH-balanced floor cleaner. You can find these cleaners at your hardware store labeled either as stone cleaners or pH-balanced cleaners. Scrub off stains and tough spots by hand. Rinse the rag and wipe away the solution from the stone floors.

2. Dry mop your floor. Small particles are the most damaging to stone floors because they cause scratching. Use a vacuum to remove dust as long as the vacuum is in good condition and will not scratch the flooring. Mop the floor with a cloth dust mop regularly to remove dust.

3. Apply a few drops of cleaner to a 6-by-6-foot area of your floor. Rub the cleaner into the floor using a cloth mop.

4. Rinse the area thoroughly with clean water. Change the rinse water often. Wipe up any standing water immediately with clean towels.

5. Repeat the process for the rest of your stone floor. Work in small, 6-by-6-foot areas to prevent standing water or chemicals from remaining on your floor for too long a period of time.
