“The injuries and deaths in quarry zone weren’t serious, but the economic losses were very huge.” Qi Ke’an, who is the director of Baoxing Quality and Technology Supervision Bureau, summarized at Baoxing County Hainan Senior Middle School temporary storage site on Apr. 23rd. 

 

Baoxing County gains the name of “the Kingdom of Stone” for its rich non-metallic mine resources such as marble; meanwhile, it also has lead and zinc mines, antimony mine, and other metal mines. The 7.0-magnitude quake hit Lushan on 20th seriously shock about 60 stone quarry enterprises in Baoxing.

 

Qi Ke’an made sure that according to primary data, the direct economic losses of 60 Baoxing quarry enterprises reached 700 million Yuan, that this number is one third of Baoxing County GDP in 2012.

 

Because of serious quake-hit in quarry zone, stone processing will be influenced. More than270 stone enterprises densely settle in the worse-hit Lingguan Town, Baoxing. Qi said that quarry industry will faced the situation of lack of raw materials in the next one to two monthes.

 

Although Baoxing was positively supporting tourism industry in recent years, the mine quarrying and processing is still an important economic mainstay. The serious losses in quarry zone means that the economic recovery in Baoxing will need a long time.
