What Are the Common Uses for Slate?

Slate is a fine-grained metamorphic rock formed from volcanic ash and clay that can be cut into very thin sheets and still maintain its strength. For these purposes and for its smooth, gray appearance, it has been used in various applications over the years -- some of which you might not have recognized. From home building to classrooms to recreation rooms, slate is often the stone material of choice.

Chalkboards

Although many classrooms today use white dry-erase boards, there was a time when the average classroom had what was commonly referred to as a blackboard. The black chalkboard was heavy and made of slate. It was later replaced by green chalkboards made from lightweight synthetic materials and then by the dry-erase versions. Slate's smooth surface is ideal for writing with chalk, and it erases easily. The color provides a good contrast from white or colored chalk to make the board easily readable in the classroom. Smaller versions of blackboards were used to make clapboards for the early movie industry to help directors mark scenes on film during production. Today a digital device has mostly replaced these clapboards, but the device is still referred to as a "slate" in the industry.

Pool Tables

If you have ever played pool on a billiards table, then you probably have played on slate. Most pool tables are made by using a carefully leveled piece of slate under a felt covering, creating an ideal rolling surface for the balls in the game. Slate can be cut very thin and ground down to a smooth surface texture because of its fine-grained composition. Still, it maintains the strength to keep from cracking under the impact of heavy pool balls.

Roof Shingles

In the Deep South, slate is often a material of choice for roof shingles. Slate shingles are natural and have the ability to absorb the high levels of heat found in places such as Florida. They are also highly durable. They are thicker and heavier than most roofing shingles made of other materials. This makes them less likely to peel off during high winds.

Tile

Slate is a popular option for decorative tile used on walkways and around gardens. It is naturally slip-resistant and has an attractive appearance. It is also often found in irregular shapes, making it possible to get creative when designing the floors or walkways. Slate tiles are often used to finish fireplaces, bathroom floors, showers, patios, pool decking and more.
