Stone countertops provide you with a kitchen surface that is both long-lasting and durable. Stone countertops are unaffected by water, hot pans and pots and require little cleanup. Stone countertops are commonly made from one of six natural stones: granite, marble, limestone, soapstone, slate and quartz. Each stone has its benefits and varies in cost, so it's important to compare and choose the one that best fits your kitchen and home.

Instructions

1. Consider the differences between natural and engineered stone. Engineered stone is made from a mixture of natural stone and resin and is nonporous, unlike natural stone which you must seal. Natural stone counters give off a variation of colors and textures that engineered stone does not.

2. Consider the hardness of each stone. Marble countertops, for example, will chip easier than granite countertops, because marble is softer than granite.

3. Compare the texture of each stone. Each stone contains different textures and colors that may not agree with the design of your kitchen. Granite, for example, is darker than quartz.

4. Compare the cost of installing each type of stone. There are different types of quality associated with each stone. A fine marble stone with vibrant colors will cost more than one with darker colors and less variation in its texture.

5. Consider how durable each stone is. Although all stone countertops are durable by nature, some last longer than others. Marble, for example, must be sealed more often than granite to prevent staining.
