Soapstone is a metamorphic rock composed of talc, dolomite, magnesite and chlorite. The amount of talc that a soapstone rock contains affects its color and texture. The higher the talc content, the softer the soapstone. Artistic-grade soapstone is very soft and easily carved. For kitchen counter tops, be sure to select architectural-grade soapstone, which is harder and more durable for daily use.
